13th SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT
The 13th Region Girls Softball draw wasn’t the best it could be for the Corbin Lady Redhounds, but it was pretty good according to Corbin Coach Chris Hart.
“We could have drawn North Laurel, so I am pretty happy about the draw,” he said. The Lady Redhounds (19-13) will take on the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets at noon Monday at North Laurel High School.
The teams met late in the season twice with Corbin winning at the Lady Redhounds Softball Complex, 4-3 on May 10, but Middlesboro took a 10-0 five-inning win at Middlesboro six days later.
Middlesboro walked through the 52nd District with a 14-3 win over Haran. The Yellow Jackets topped Harlan County in the championship game, 4-1.
The two teams are paired in the top bracket of the tournament with 51st district winner, Knox Central and Clay County, who lost to North Laurel in the 49th District.
Knox Central ran past Lynn Camp 15-0 in three innings then defeated Pineville, 1-0. Clay County beat the Panthers twice this season, winning 14-9 and 9-4.
Two of the top 25 teams, North Laurel and South Laurel landed in the lower bracket and will likely collide in the semifinals Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.
South Laurel, with a region best, 26-6 record will take on Pineville at 4 p.m. Monday, followed by North Laurel (22-12-1) taking on Harlan County at 6 p.m.
The Lady Lions will come in as a big underdog after finishing the season, 8-13. They did finish the last week of the season winning three of five games, beating Lynn Camp, 16-0, Bell County, 10-7 and Barbourville 7-4.
South Laurel is on a seven-game winning streak since its 9-5 loss to Madison Southern.
Harlan County (17-12) will take on North Laurel in the nightcap. The Jaguars have won six straight 13th Region titles and is currently the state’s winningest softball team.
The are 22-12-1 after finishing the regular season with a 7-3 record in May. The Jaguars played undoubtedly the toughest schedule of the 13th Region teams; losing to 10 Kentucky ranked teams and one Nationally ranked team, Crestview, Fl.
The Tournament semifinals will be played Tuesday at 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. with the championship slated for Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
