Both the boys and girls 13th Region soccer championships were contested Wednesday evening, with the Corbin Lady Redhounds facing South Laurel at North Laurel High School, and the Corbin boys facing North Laurel at the CHS soccer facility at Corbin Primary School.
For the third year in a row, Coach Erik Steely’s Lady Hounds fell to the Lady Cardinals in the region championship game. The game was scoreless at the half, then South Laurel senior Karli Parker scored a goal with about 33 minutes left in the game. Corbin’s Mady Thompson responded with a goal close to five mintues later, but the Cards scored twice more to secure the 3-1 victory and a trip to the 2014 KHSAA state soccer tournament. The Lady Hounds end the season with an overall record of 13-8.
Meanwhile, the Corbin boys (12-5) are headed back to the state tournament this year after winning their third region title in a row with a 5-1 victory over North Laurel. Senior Hound Ryan Johnson scored the only goal of the first half, followed by fellow senior Tulio Canineu scoring on a free kick about seven minutes into the second half, junior Lucas Canineu scoring at the 24:32 mark, and Tulio scoring again, this time on a penalty kick, at 23:47. Sophomore Jaguar Adam Gambrel scored one goal for his team before Corbin’s Dylan Browne closed the door with the Redhounds’ fifth goal, scored with 13:52 remaining in the game.
After the win, Corbin Head Coach Armando Cima said that he likes the way his team is playing heading into the state tournament, which will kick off next Tuesday, October 28, when the Redhounds host the winners of the 15th Region, the Johnson Central Golden Eagles (12-6-4).
