13th Region Champs
Williamsburg extended its winning streak to six games Monday afternoon with a 17-7 win over the Wayne County Cardinals at Briar Park in Williamsburg. The Yellow Jackets spotted Wayne County a 4-0 lead before they stormed back to score 17 runs.
Trailing 4-0 going into the bottom of the third the Jackets scored five runs to take a 5-4 lead. Chase Fields led off with a single then went to sec ond when Brent Foley drew a walk. Senior Andy Greer cleared the bases with a triple.
A walk to Matt Jones and Aaron Root loaded the bases for Cody Herrell, who hit a single to send Jones in from third. Root scored the go-ahead run on a John Reynolds sacrifice grounder to second.
Wayne County answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth and retook the lead but the Jackets scored five more in their half of the inning for a 10-6 lead.
Fields again led off the inning, this time with a walk. Wayne County’s Ryan Steele nearly got out of trouble when he got Darrin Stanfill to pop out to the mound and got Brent Foley on a fly ball to rightfield.
But Andy Greer greeted the Cardinal pitcher with a double. Jones followed with a single, Root drew a walk and Harrell smacked a triple and the rout was on.
Foley, Greer, Hones and Root all scored three runs in the win. Greer also hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
“We hit the ball real well,” said Williamsburg coach Don Stricklin.
