After round one playoff games on Thursday and Friday, two coverage area high school football teams are left standing.

Coverage area cross country runners capped off a successful 2023 season at this past weekend’s Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

On Monday, the 13th Region champion Whitley County Lady Colonels picked up their 35th win of the 2023 season, defeating Wolfe County 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20) in the first round of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Volleyball Championship Tournament.

Winter workouts, spring camps, long practices in the blazing summer heat, pre-season scrimmages and eleven weeks of regular season battles on the gridiron have all led up to this – the start of the 2023 Kentucky High School Athletic Association high school football playoffs.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, runners from Corbin, Williamsburg, Lynn Camp and Whitley County high schools made the trip to Cave Lake Park in Wayne County to compete in this year’s regional championship cross country meet.

With their fifth victory over the Corbin Lady Hounds this season, the Whitley County Lady Colonels improved to 34-2 on the year and won their second straight 13th Region championship title.

It was a successful year for the Corbin girls golf team. Showing continued improvement throughout the season, the Lady Hounds capped off their fall campaign by sending three players to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s state championship tournament.
