Tuesday crash claims the life of one adult, one child

A Tuesday morning crash on Bee Creek Road (KY 1193) claimed the lives of two people, including one adult and one child, who was a Corbin student.

The crash happened about 7:35 a.m. near Bee Creek Market.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2017 GMC Acadia, operated by Stephanie N. Smith, 33, of Corbin, was traveling southbound and crossed the center and struck a 2012 Lexus passenger car, which was operated by Diana L. Alsip, 67, of Corbin, according to a Kentucky State Police release.

A juvenile passenger in the GMC suffered severe injuries and was transported by Whitley County EMS to Baptist Health Corbin. He was later flown out by Air Evac and was enroute to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital when the flight had to divert to St. Joseph London Hospital due to his injuries and condition, according to the release.

He was pronounced deceased by the Laurel County Coroner’s Office at 9:48 a.m. A second juvenile in the vehicle was transported to Baptist Health Corbin and later released. The operator was also treated and released.

The operator of the Lexus, Diana Alsip, was flown by Air Evac to the University of Tennessee Hospital with severe injuries. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Knox County Coroner’s Office at 10:21 am., according to state police.

Her juvenile passenger was transported by Whitley County EMS to Baptist Health Corbin, then later air lifted by PHI to the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital with non-life threating injuries.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by KSP Post 11 Trooper Shane Bowling. He was assisted at the scene by Post 11 personnel, Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Corbin Fire Department, Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Whitley County EMS, Corbin Police Department, Whitley County Sheriff’s office, PHI, and Air Evac.

First responders were warned to be careful when responding to the accident Tuesday morning as the roadway was slick, according to radio traffic between first responders.

The Corbin Independent School District sent out a release to parents Tuesday morning, which stated the following: “Corbin Independent Schools regret to inform you there was a non-school related car accident early this morning involving one of our students. Sadly, it is our understanding that the student has passed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our school community. We will share more information as it becomes available.”
