Block Party to kick off 2023 summer events schedule in Williamsburg

The official beginning to summer is still two weeks away, but Williamsburg is heralding the season a bit early, kicking off its summer event schedule later this week.

Off the Clock will perform in Williamsburg Friday evening to kick off the block party season.

The first event of the summer is a Block Party this Friday at Bill Woods Park, featuring the band Off the Clock from Lexington. The event will take place from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Williamsburg Main Street Manager Jonathan Wyatt encouraged the community to come out and enjoy an “evening of music, dancing and fun.”

The following week, on Friday, June 16, is The Main Squeeze Lemonade Stand Contest, which is a first-time event in Williamsburg. The contest will have children setting up their own lemonade stands throughout the Green Space on Main to sell lemonade and vie for the best decorated stand. That event is set to begin at 6 p.m.

The contest will be followed by the season’s first Movie in the Park at Bill Woods Park beginning at dusk.

Wyatt said that more information regarding both events would be posted to the Williamsburg Main Street Program’s Facebook page in the coming week.

Those events will be followed up with the Cumberland River Cruise-In on Saturday, June 17, at the courthouse square.

The fun continues on June 23 for Country Meets City, which will be held at the Green Space on Main from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Wyatt said that he was ready to get the event season going and asked that the community be actively involved.

“We’re so excited to get our 2023 summer season off to a great start,” said Wyatt. “Remember, the success and continuation of these events are only made possible by your support. So, come out and support your small town.”

Wyatt noted that anyone who may have any questions can contact Williamsburg Main Street Program at (606) 280-0872 or by sending them a message via their Facebook page.

Retired surgeon, public health director discuss dangers related to tick bites

With the arrival of warmer weather, many people are eager to explore scenic routes and enjoy the great outdoors. However, there is a growing concern about the presence of life-threatening bugs.

This concern has been highlighted by the recent case of Alice Fae Weiland, 81, who was bitten by a tick and developed a dangerous, life-threatening illness called Ehrlichiosis [Er-lick-e-oh-sis].

Jim Moss, a retired surgeon and Alice’s partner, shared the frightening experience of helping Alice and expressed gratitude for her survival.

“I got home a few weeks ago, and she didn’t sound good. She sounded confused, so I went to her house, and she was shaking badly. So I bundled her up in the car, and they admitted her straight into the hospital. She had Ehrlichiosis, and it nearly killed her,” Moss explains, highlighting how terrified he was for her.

Ehrlichiosis is an infectious disease caused by rickettsia (small bacteria found in ticks) and transmitted by the bite of a larger tick than we are used to seeing.

“This tick is not small like a deer tick associated with Lyme disease. It has a small white spot on its back, giving it the name Lone Star Tick,” Moss stressed.

The early symptoms can include fever or chills, headache, malaise, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and an altered mental status, such as confusion.

Commonly, it is confused with the intestinal (stomach) flu and flu.

“People honestly need to be aware of it. Prevention is key; the earlier, the better,” Moss said. “Alice is doing better and is already back to work. It’ll be weeks before she can get back to normal, though. It was scary.”

To reduce the risk of contracting Ehrlichiosis or other tick-borne illnesses, it’s important to be cautious when spending time outdoors.

Marcy Rein, the Public Health Director at the Whitley County Health Department, shared helpful information for people going outdoors.

“When people are outside in brushy, grassy, or wooded areas, they are most at risk for tick bites,” Rein said.

“We recommend wearing insect repellent. We also recommend checking yourself for ticks after you come inside. This means checking your clothes and equipment and then checking your body. Ticks like nooks and crannies, so check areas like behind your knees, at your waistband, where your underwear covers, in your armpits, around your ears, and in your hair. Teach your kids to let you know if they find a tick on themselves. Learn how to remove a tick with tweezers safely. Watch for symptoms after a tick bite and see your healthcare provider if you have concerns,” Rein continued.

Moss said that at least two people in Whitley County have had grave illnesses following a tick bite, both of which had Ehrlichiosis.

“Prevention works and includes the very early removal of a tick in under four hours if possible. For treatment, use deet on yourself and permethrin on your clothes, or the new picaridin can be used on both. The lower the concentration of deet, the less time it works. Strive for more concentration of deet for better results,” Moss informed.

If you are bitten by a tick and have any of these symptoms, please see your primary care provider.

“I hope people have a happy and safe summer and stay aware,” Moss finalized.

For more information about Ehrlichiosis, please visit the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/ehrlichiosis/transmission/index.html.

Remember, when you step outside, prioritize your health and take necessary precautions. Your future self will thank you for it.

June 4-10 declared National Garden Week in Corbin

The Corbin Garden Club has received recognition this week as Mayor Suzie Razmus declared June 4-10 as National Garden Club Week.

Mayor Suzie Razmus recently signed a proclamation declaring June 4 – 10, as National Garden Club Week in the City Of Corbin. Witnessing the signing are Carcille Burchette – South Atlantic Region Director of the National Garden Club; Laura Whitney Burchette – Director of the Mountain Laurel District of the Kentucky Garden Club; DeAnn Massey-Slater – Corbin Garden Club; Aileen Laws – Corbin Garden Club; and Lee Parks – President of the Corbin Garden Club.

The week-long acknowledgment celebrates their tireless efforts of giving back to their communities through various projects.

The Garden Club has been an instrumental part in beautifying the City of Corbin through the years. They installed the Monarch Butterfly Garden located at Sanders Park, which they plant and maintain every year. They have helped plant flowers in the pots on Main Street, at the Corbin Public Library and the Enginner Street Bridge.

Last year they had two Eagle Scouts plant flowerbeds at NIBROC Park and the Corbin Garden Club has furnished and planted flowers in both of the beds. They also help maintain beds and pots by weeding, pruning, fertilizing, etc.

The Corbin Garden Club has also engaged with Girl Scouts and held Earth Day events. One year, they furnished and planted a new redbud tree at the back of Sanders Park.

Corbin Tourism Director Maggy Monhollen highlighted the tremendous efforts that the Corbin Garden Club goes through to enhance our community.

“The Corbin Garden Club is a vital part of our community. National Garden Week is significant because this week is an opportunity to encourage pride in our community, interest new members, and work with other community groups to be part of those efforts. The Corbin Garden Club focuses on these efforts not just for this one week, but actually all year long,” said Monhollen.

The Garden Club’s commitment in preserving the city’s appearance makes Corbin a sustainable city that attracts visitors.

The community is encouraged to support the Garden Club and its members, who work tirelessly to keep Corbin looking its best.
