UPDATE: The identity of the person who purchased the winning Mega Millions ticket in Corbin has been released.
Corbin resident, George Cerveny, won $1 million during Tuesday night’s Mega Millions drawing, matching all five white numbers. He bought the ticket at the Circle K store on Gordon Hill Pike.
According to a press release from the Kentucky Lottery, Cerveny checked the numbers before going to bed, but didn’t check his ticket, knowing that he hadn’t matched the Megaball number.
“I saw the numbers [Tuesday night] and thought those look real good, real good numbers and they looked familiar but it didn’t hit the three number and of course, that’s the [Megaball] and I thought, ‘Okay, time to go to bed,'” said Cerveny. “I went to bed a millionaire and didn’t even know it. I’ve played the same numbers for years and this morning I got a phone call from one of my employees saying, ‘Hey, call Circle K. The manager’s trying to get ahold of you.'”
Cerveny noted that he has purchased lottery tickets from the same Circle K store for about 10 years, but has never won more than a few dollars at a time, according to the release. Cerveny and his wife, Jennifer, claimed the winnings Wednesday at the Kentucky Lottery Headquarters, where they received a check for $715,000, the remainder left after taxes.
As for what he expects to do with his winnings, Cerveny isn’t planning anything too flashy.
“We’re going to get out of debt. That’s probably the answer for most people but we’re going to get out of debt and not have to worry about it…and figure out a nice vacation,” said Cerveny.
The Circle K on Gordon Hill Pike will also receive $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

U.S. District Judge Claria Horn Boom sentenced Michael Andrew Nakonechny, 41, of Whitley County, to 162 months in federal prison on Tuesday for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, according to a news release from the United States Attorney’s Office.
According to his plea agreement, on Aug. 5, 2022, law enforcement in Whitley County located a backpack that Nakonechny possessed and contained over 50 grams of methamphetamine. A London man, who continues to be held in the Whitley County Detention Center in connection with a Sept. 3 fatal crash in Corbin, has told police that he wasn’t driving the vehicle when the accident occurred, and that a third party was there and left the accident scene.
However, Corbin Police dispute this claim noting that it would have been impossible for three people to have been inside the vehicle when it crashed, according to a News Journal review of court documents.
