A second reading of the calendar was presented to and approved by the Williamsburg Independent Board of Education during their regular monthly meeting last week. As noted during the calendar’s first reading at the board’s February meeting, many of the dates remain the same from the current year’s calendar. According to Superintendent Tim Melton, the biggest change is in regards to fall break. “One of the parts that we value is our start time, and we also value the time in the spring when our seniors go on their trip and the time over Christmas. But there has been a lot of discussion over fall break,” said Melton during the board’s February meeting. Teachers were surveyed about possible changes to fall break, with three possible choices to select: two days in October, two days in November or two days added to Thanksgiving break. Melton said that the majority of teachers selected to have two days added to Thanksgiving break, which will give students that entire week off. Other dates from the 2023-2024 school calendar in which students will be out of school include: Friday, Sept. 8 – Old Fashioned Trading Days Tuesday, Nov. 7 – Election Day Monday, Dec. 18 through Monday, Jan. 1 – Christmas Break Monday, Jan. 15 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday, April 1 through Friday, April 5 – Spring Break Tuesday, May 14 – Election Day The first day for students will be Wednesday, Aug. 30, and the final day is scheduled for Thursday, May 23. Regarding the current year’s calendar, Melton confirmed that students are still on track for this year’s final day of school to be Thursday, May 25. In other board of education business: – The board approved a school resource officer contract with the Williamsburg Police Department that formally adds a second SRO back on patrol at the school. Melton said that Officer Scott Bunch has been working at the school as an SRO since sometime after students returned to classes in January, but a contract had yet to be approved between the two entities. There was a small gap in which only one SRO was on patrol after one of the former SROs took a job elsewhere."}
