They sent Corbin Public Works out to Highways 312 and 770 to pick up trash that had collected to the point that Sams said, “It looked like a trash dump!” No, it wasn’t Corbin’s responsibility to clean up that area, but Razmus and Sams recognized that the “eyesore” was a reflection on Corbin. That area is the responsibility of the Laurel County government. It had been neglected so long that trash had built up and it looked like a garbage dump. It took seven workers 10 hours to fill 95 of 45-gallon trash bags with trash. Sams said they collected seven tires and picked up numerous vehicle parts that were too large to put in the bags. Although they came to the rescue this time, they shouldn’t have to repeat it. This stretch of road has been the victim of a trash overload for years. Cleaning up after those who litter should receive high priority. I wrote about this area in my column last week after hearing complaints. Coincidentally, Razmus and Sams were discussing the bad effects the area had on the city. Cleaning it up was the right thing to do this time, but not again. Laurel County, do your job! The Corbin Public Works department deserves appreciation for the work they do. They are efficient, cooperative and friendly. You couldn’t ask for better service. On a couple of occasions I have had to call upon them to haul away material while renovating my daughter’s and sister’s houses. From the moment I talked to the gentleman, who was very friendly, to the short time they reacted to my request, I couldn’t have been more pleased. They have made the area in southern Laurel County look so much better. However, I guarantee in a short while it will need attention again. Your turn, Laurel County!"}
