Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said the scammers are telling residents that money is owed for some time of violation and they need to make a payment immediately over the phone. “We have received a handful of reports about these calls,” Acciardo said, adding that he personally received one of the calls Monday. Acciardo said the scammers do not identify themselves as a member of a particular department. “They are just saying ‘This is the police department,’” Acciardo said. Acciardo said the number showing up on caller ID is (606) 657-0952. When deputies called the number, it was answered with a recorded message. Acciardo said the number is from a cell phone and unlike landlines, the extension is not linked to a particular area of the state. Acciardo said it is similar to a frequently used ruse in which the scammers claimed to be calling from the IRS. “They catch people off guard and it works,” Acciardo said, noting some people get scared when they hear “police” or “IRS.” Acciardo said if law enforcement is attempting to reach an individual concerning a violation, officers wouldmake contact through the mail via a court subpoena or summons, or in person. Anyone who receives such a phone call and has concerned is encouraged to contacted their local district court clerk or law enforcement. “We will be glad to talk to them,” Acciardo said."}
