It is one of my favorites. The story is supposed to have taken place during World War II at a general store way back in the hills of Eastern Kentucky. It was late spring and all of the fellows were holding down the benches on the front porch of the store. They were whittling and talking and enjoying the weather in general when someone rushed out and announced excitedly, “The Allies have just landed in Normandy!” Nonplussed, one old codger paused a moment in his whittling, looked up at the cloudless sky and allowed, “Well, they shore did pick a nice day for it.” Inside the store, an old woman was heard to say, “I wish Hitler would get married and settle down.” With the sad demise of the neighborhood general store, the heart of the community stopped beating. What had once been an integral part of small town America became sentimental history. Today, whenever I pass the one that sat down the road from where I was raised, I sometimes get a lump in my throat. The store has long since closed. Weeds have taken it over, the windows are covered over with old yellowed newspapers and the doors are boarded up with two-by-fours. Whether the boards are there to keep looters out or to keep the memory of tall tales and spun yarns in, I don’t know. But there’s one thing I do know and that’s for sure. Somewhere in that world we go to when we leave this one, there’s a bunch of fellows sitting around in a circle with their chairs reared back on their hind legs. Every now and then one of them will look up from his whittling and say … “Did I ever tell you fellers about the time … ?” Feather Cake Bessie Steele Williams, Corbin, KY Ingredients 3 cups cake flour 2 cups sugar 4 tsp. baking powder 1/2 cup butter 1 cup milk 1/4 tsp. salt 4 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla Directions Mix the baking powder and salt with the sifted flour. Cream the butter and gradually add the sugar, beating while adding. Beat the eggs without separating the whites and yolks. Add to the well creamed mixture of butter and sugar. Add the flour mixture a little at a time, alternating with the milk. Add the flavoring and beat long enough to mix thoroughly. Pour batter into well greased and floured cake pans or loaf pan. Bake at 375 for 30 to 35 minutes for layer cake; 350 degrees for 55 to 60 minutes for loaf pan (I chose the loaf). Ice with the following: Chocolate Icing Ingredients 1 egg beaten 2 tbsp. butter 3 Tbsp. milk 1 cup sugar 2 squares chocolate 1/2 tsp. vanilla Directions Mix together all ingredients except vanilla. Bring to boil. Take from heat and let cool. Add flavor and beat until creamy. Spread on cooled cake. Note: This will have a glossy look but will be soft and creamy.
https://www.thenewsjournal.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Bena-Mae-mug137.jpg"}
