Sarah “Libby” Balenovich served on the board from 1997 until 2009. Current Corbin Board of Education Chair Kim Croley recalled how when she came onto the board in 2007, Balenovich was one of the veteran members. “She sat next to me and she would clue me in,” Croley said of Balenovich, adding that when she had a question about an item to be discussed at the meeting, Balenovich would explain it to her. “She was always the person that was willing to help,” Croley said. During the board meetings, Croley said Balenovich was not one to waste words. “She was one of those people who didn’t say a lot until they had something that needed to be said,” Croley said. Balenovich retired from Harlan County schools after a 30-year teaching career. Croley and former board member Lisa Cleary agreed that it was an asset to the board to have someone with first-hand experience in the classroom serving on the board. “The wisdom she gave us was invaluable,” Cleary said. “They just have a different perspective,” Croley said. In addition to the wisdom, Cleary and Croley agreed that Balenovich was a modest person. “She was just an exceptional person who was kind, considerate and respectful,” Cleary said. “I really enjoyed getting to know her and serving with her on the school board,” she said. “She flew under the radar,” Croley added. “For her, it was never about her but, rather, always about those around her.” Balenovich is survived by her husband, Bob, and children: John, Elizabeth and Emily. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Christ Hands in Harlan, the Harlan County Humane Society or Hospice of the Bluegrass in Harlan.
